Cathead Bay Sand Castle

Property Description

Cathead Bay Sand Castle sits on the shore of Lake Michigan and is in a private community on Cathead Bay, one of the best kept secrets of Northern Michigan. We are literally on the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula.  The light house is five minutes away.

The house is surrounded by a nature preserve and sits at the foot of the Leelanau State Park Dunes. You can cross the road and take a hike up the dunes and usually you will have them all to your self, because the public has to park miles away and hike in to get to them.

The beach is pristine with fine, sugary sand and not rocky like the Grand Traverse Bay side can be and it is sandy as far out into the lake as you can walk.  This beach seems almost tropical and you can walk the shore for miles.  If you head south you will end up, after the last house, in an area of protected lake shore that is also part of Leelanau State Park.

This house feels more like a colorful ocean beach house than a lake house.  There is a fire pit by the beach and another up near the house.

Since buying the house we have been sprucing it up a bit. Mostly painting to freshen it up. The furnishings will be all new. We have other plans too!

The house is very cleverly designed. Closing the huge pocket doors between the Kitchen and Living Room creates a giant Master Suite, since the master bedroom w/full bath is off of the living room.  At night there is great privacy from the other bedrooms which are towards the front of the house near the front sitting room.

There is another full bathroom in the hall near the two bedrooms that has a walk in tiled shower.  The master bathroom has a large tub with shower.

The Bunkhouse next to the house has bunk beds which are 2 full size mattresses and there is also a twin size bed, so this area sleeps 5. There is also a couch and TV in the bunkhouse. It is a big a hit with kids and also allows parents to get some quiet time. Bunk house is not heated so please consider this when booking the cooler months.

The bed sizes are as follows:
1st Bedroom in the main house MASTER -New King bed, sleeps 2
2nd Bedroom-New Queen bed, sleeps 2
3rd Bedroom-1 twin size bunk bed, sleeps 2 and 1 twin bed, sleeps 1 more.
Total of 7 can sleep in the main house in beds.
Bunkhouse(Separate from house) can sleep up to 5.
Bath #1: One full with walk in shower
Bath #2: One full with large tub/shower

All of the bedrooms look out to the dunes and the sitting room, kitchen and living room all have a great view of the lake.

The house has wifi and cable, with a tv in the living room of main house and one in the bunk house.

The town of Northport is about nine minutes down the road and it has a great grocery store and several restaurants and bars.  You can be in Leland with the quaint shops of Fishtown and Suttons Bay with all of it’s shops and restaurants is roughly twenty minutes. If gambling is your thing, there is the Leelanau Sands Casino in Peshawbestown, which is a little north of Sutton’s Bay.  The “Big Town” of Traverse City is about forty five minutes south and so is Glen Arbor home of my favorite coffee ever Leelanau Coffee Roasters and for everything cherry there is Cherry Republic. The Leelanau Peninsula is home to several wineries, including one owned by Madonna’s parents, the Ciccone Vineyard and Winery.

The house faces west, so you will see some of the most amazing sunsets you have ever seen.  At night there is no city light pollution so the sky is loaded with stars.

Whether you want to sit and relax all day by the beach, swim, kayak, go off exploring the many hiking trails in the area, check out the nearby towns, take a bike ride, hit the casino, plus so much more, we think you will be glad you chose Cathead Bay Sand Castle.

This place was incredible. Out the front is the dunes, and out the back is Lake Michigan. The house was clean and fit the 11 of us with no problem. We spent the days climbing dunes and swimming, with the evenings around the fire. The views were spectacular and the sunsets even better. We will be back for sure!!!

This place is awesome. Out the front you have the dunes, out the back is Lake Michigan. Incredible views and amazing sunsets. The house was clean and fit the 11 of us with no problem. We spent the days climbing the dunes and swimming, and the evenings around a campfire. The town of Northport is a really cool spot as well. We will be back next year for sure!!!!!

The house was perfect for our mix of ages vacationing together, with a pet. The master suite is a true retreat. Perfection. Queen bed room is standard with large closet, and room with twin bed and bunkbed is standard, and has stacked laundry. The bunkhouse is an unfinished garage with a lake front window, that was embraced by the teenagers. The single level house and flat area to the water was good for those manuvering with physical ailments. For a few, this was a working vacation but due to a summer storm the internet was down for 24 hours. Although tech savvy teenagers weren't able to troubleshoot, we were amazed that the property owner responded in real time. Plus, he researched the peninsula for a resolution in this one-cable truck area, and provided continuous updates. Also, from the very beginning, Property Manager Connie Richards, provided a sense of comfort with her accessibility.

The location of this home is amazing. The views are breathtaking. We were vacationing with two young families and the house was perfect for our needs. Clean, comfortable, and nicely decorated. We spent most of our time sitting on the deck soaking up sun and enjoying the beach sounds. Having a sandbox as a backyard was awesome for keeping our 1-4 yr olds entertained. Highly recommend and will definitely return!

Hello Connie!
Our family's stay in the Sand Castle was certainly relaxing. The huge backyard sandbox provided endless hours of activity for our young grandchildren. Along with the dunes and the very short walk to beach, our family truly enjoyed the stay immensely. We appreciate the extra bunk house that made it perfect for our large family. We look forward to possible future vacations to the area, and we will certainly keep the Sand Castle in mind.
Thanks again for helping us have an extraordinary family vacation.
With great appreciation,
Phil and Kelly
